Maple Hayes Pupils Commemorate 80th Anniversary of VE Day
Pupils at Maple Hayes Dyslexia School marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a special commemorative Street Party.
Children from the school participated in various activities to learn about both VE Day and VJ Day, observing a respectful two-minute silence to honour those who served and sacrificed during World War II. The celebration featured a traditional wartime-inspired lunch of sandwiches, sausage rolls, and cake.
Dr Daryl Brown, Co-Principal of the school, said: "It's vital for our younger generation to understand and appreciate the significance of historical events like VE Day. By creating this immersive learning experience on the actual anniversary, we've helped our pupils connect with an important part of our national history in a meaningful way. The pupils showed tremendous respect during the two-minute silence, demonstrating their understanding of the sacrifices made by previous generations."
The school included information about the upcoming VJ Day anniversary (15th August) in the activities, as pupils will be on summer holiday during that commemoration.
The special Street Party event provided pupils with context for both historic occasions while fostering a deeper appreciation for peace and remembrance.
